Questions people actually ask
Will I see a tiger?
Honestly: maybe. Ranthambore has one of the better sighting rates in India, but it is a wild reserve of over 1,300 square kilometres and no operator can promise you an animal. Roughly speaking, a single safari gives you a fair chance and two safaris across two zones give you a good one.
Should I do this as a day trip from Jaipur?
It works, but we will say plainly that staying a night in Sawai Madhopur and doing two safaris — dawn and afternoon — is a much better trip. The day trip is fourteen hours for one roll of the dice.
What is the best season?
October to April for comfort. April to June is punishingly hot but has the highest sighting rates, because animals concentrate around the remaining water.
What is a zone, and can I choose one?
The park is divided into numbered zones and permits are allocated by a government system, not by your operator. Anyone promising you a specific zone is either guessing or misleading you.
Is a shared gypsy fine, or should I book a private one?
A shared gypsy seats six and is perfectly good. A private gypsy costs considerably more and buys you flexibility and elbow room for cameras, not better sightings.
Is a canter better than a gypsy?
No. Canters are twenty-seat open trucks — cheaper, noisier, and further from the action. If tigers are the point, take the gypsy.
