The day, hour by hour
- Before you go
Take the first ferry
The 09:00 sailing is transformative compared with midday: shorter security, emptier island, better light on the statue.
- Security
Airport-style screening at Battery Park
Allow 45 minutes in summer. This is the queue that eats people's mornings.
- Liberty Island
About 90 minutes
The grounds walk circles the statue. Without pedestal tickets you cannot go inside, and the outside is the point anyway.
- Ellis Island
About 90 minutes
The Immigration Museum is the sleeper hit of New York — most visitors expect to pass through and stay two hours.
Where you meet us
Battery Park ferry terminal
Castle Clinton, Battery Park, Manhattan
If you cannot find the driver
Ask for Battery Park, Castle Clinton — not the Staten Island Ferry terminal, which is a different (free) boat that does not stop at Liberty Island.
What to bring
- The mobile voucher and photo ID
- A warm layer — the harbour wind is much colder than the street

Questions people actually ask
Can I go up inside the Statue of Liberty?
Only with a pedestal or crown ticket, which are strictly limited. Crown tickets typically sell out three to six months ahead. If that matters to you, book it before you book flights.
Is the free Staten Island Ferry a good alternative?
It passes the statue at a distance and costs nothing, which is genuinely worth doing. It does not land on Liberty Island, so you never get close. They are different experiences, not substitutes.
How long does the whole thing take?
Four hours realistically, including security, both islands and the ferry legs. Three if you skip Ellis Island, which we would not.
What time should I go?
The first sailing of the day. Security at Battery Park by mid-morning in summer can be 45 minutes on its own.
Is Ellis Island worth the extra time?
Yes — for most visitors it turns out to be the more affecting half. If you have any American ancestry, the searchable passenger records alone justify it.
Do I need my passport?
Photo ID is sensible and is required if you hold pedestal or crown tickets, which are issued in your name.
